For reasons known only to Verizon (and maybe not even to them), I’ve lost my ability to upload files of any significant size, and so can’t get the interview with directors Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam discussing their new documentary, THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS, up in time for the film’s debut weekend at Film Forum.

Which is a pity, because, of the films I’ve seen in the past few years about Tibet’s struggle for independence from China, SUN — in focusing on the tumultuous year of 2008 and the numerous protests that took place both within and without Tibet– provides the most comprehensive explanation of the issues involved, including an exploration of the rifts occurring within the independence movement itself. Instead of focusing purely on the spiritual side of this struggle — a narrative gambit I’ve noted in other docs, and not always the most compelling argument for non-spiritual guys like me — Sarin and Tenzing acknowledge the politics of this issue, and show political realities are occasionally competing against religious ideals. It’s a worthwhile film if you’re interested in better understanding this fight, or even if you’re just interested in political documentaries in general.

Right now, I’m looking to Monday to finally have the episode up. Meantime, please check out the trailer and visit the website.

So I figured, while I’m in London interviewing some of the people involved with PIRATE RADIO, Richard Curtis’ film about those intrepid souls who in the 60’s brought the UK their daily dose of rock when the BBC was loathe to, why not try a little experiment in whether one dude with a netbook, a pocket camcorder, a copy of QuickTime Pro, and his hotel’s complimentary WiFi service can beat the international news bureaus at their own game? Hence this episode of MMP, our first video episode, wherein some Londoners voice their preference for film’s original, British title, THE BOAT THAT ROCKED, or the title it’ll be carrying in the U.S.

A few technical notes: First, if you’re watching this ep on Sunday the 18th or Monday the 19th, then mission accomplished — I’m actually still in London conducting my interviews. Next, I have to admit that cutting in QuickTime doesn’t allow for the most elegant product (I believe the sage physician Leonard McCoy coined the most fitting analogy: “Threading a needle with a sledgehammer”). Finally, this ep may not play on an iPod. Sorry, I just didn’t have enough time to research the proper formats. I’d appreciate hearing if you were able to see this ep or not. Just use the comments form on the MMP website.

In any case, please enjoy my chiseled good looks, and a set of rather interesting opinions on one of the more pressing issues of the day. (Okay, maybe I have to get my priorities straight.)

Fortunately, I did take a backup a couple of weeks ago, so everything’s restored back to the Tim Burton/9 episode. We’ll get the rest back up this week — hopefully tomorrow. That will include the BRIGHT STAR, PARADISE, and COCO BEFORE CHANEL interviews.

‘Course, if you need to hear those eps right now, you can go to my postings on HuffPost.

Sorry about this little snag, fellas. We’ll get this info to you just as soon as we work it out. (Quick, what movie is that quote from?)

The latest episode of the highly-regarded EDGY PODCAST REVIEWS offers hosts Daniel & Jana’s opinions on MMP and, to put it mildly, they kinda love it.

Here, in fine, film industry tradition, are some excerpted quotes (trust me, I’m being fair in my selection):

“…the length of the episodes are about 20 minutes and left us wanting more… Dan asks great questions… We recommend Mighty Movie Podcast for listeners who want a different style and presentation for a podcast in the TV and Film category.

Daniel: Four Stars

Jana: Four and a Half Stars“

Clicking on the badge above will take you to the page featuring the episode, or you can just click here.

But what you really should do is to subscribe to EDGY PODCAST REVIEWS on iTunes. Daniel & Jana are fun to listen to and know from whence they speak — their critiques are well-reasoned and usually spot-on. Whether you’re a tentative explorer in the world of podcasting or drinking deeply from that deep, deep well (and, really, you should get out every now and then and get some sun), they’ll open you up to stuff you never dreamed existed. Me, I shall forever be in their debt for having steered me to THE CHILDREN’S HOUR OF KNOWLEDGE (too bad these guys seem to have stopped producing eps, but that’s not D&J’s fault).
