Bill Stone on TRIUMPH OF THE WALL

It's Chris Overing vs. a pile of rocks and the forces of time in TRIUMPH OF THE WALL.

It's Chris Overing vs. a pile of rocks and the forces of time in TRIUMPH OF THE WALL.

Filmmaker Bill Stone’s task couldn’t have been simpler: Document artist Chris Overing as he built a stone wall on a large estate in Quebec. In two months time, the director anticipated, he’d have an interesting rumination on an elaborate and obscure craft.

Eight years later, with the wall unfinished and Stone wondering what he had gotten into in throwing his lot with the enigmatic Overing, the director took his footage and created TRIUMPH OF THE WALL, a documentary about, yes, building a wall, but also about the artistic will versus the calendar, about the expectations we place on each other and ourselves, and about the process of documentary making itself.

I got to sit down with Stone to discuss the creation of this beautiful and slyly profound film. Click on the player to hear the show.
